Basic props and Building Externals

Today too add further variation I modelled up some basic props to be placed on the previously modelled item stands, to keep things quick and save time (since these models wont be seen much) I simply applied an automatic UV map to these models and placed a simple wood texture from my texture library over the full UV map, simply acting as a 'skin' texture.
I also started work on the exterior of the building (please see fourth and fifth images).

Source texture from my own texture library, I simply tiled the texture with my tiling technique so the texture could act as a skin for the models.

Wall Model Texture

Today I threw a texture onto my wall model. heres how it looks!

Item cages

This week amongst other work I worked on a item cage for the store environment Throughout an ikea store there are many cages that stock gets placed in, I modelled one of these to be duplicated throughout the environment.
To achieve the model I simply started off with a basic cube, inserted another cube inside the first cube and 'cut out' the middle section of the first cube with the second cube using an intersection boolean, I repeated this step for the holes in the side of the cage, I simply placed 5x5 cubes on each side of the main cube and subtracted giving the final model.

This is the scene with all the current models placed in and the lamp model inserted, Im pretty happy with it!

Pricetags

December the 18th 2010

Throughout an ikea store there are many price tags, I thought it was important to replicate one of these tags. I modelled a very simple L shaped price tag to be hooked onto the shelving units. I used the Ikea lamp instructional booklet graphics once again on the price tag.

The above is a snap of the simple tag model.

I made a paper texture by simply taking the cardboard texture that I had previously scanned for the box model, set it to grayscale and increased the brightness.
The same as the box model again, I applied the cover graphics of the ikea instructional booklet to the UV, and took the final UV from photoshop and imported it to maya.

Here is the final price tag model with texture applied.

Shop items to go on the shelves

This week I worked on a simple box asset to place on the shelves, I tried to make the box quite reusable to it could be duplicated without too much repetition, the base model of the box is a very simple rectangle cube, I kept the base model quite simple to reflect the simplistic look of the scene. I spent a while texturing the box to get it just right, I was very happy with the results.

Above is the simple base model for the box.

The above is a cardboard texture that I scanned in.

Shelving units

December the 12th 2010

This week I started to put together some more props for the environment, I thought it was quite important to have some nice shelving units since I plan to have the lamp interact mostly on shelving units, I started to build them from scratch keeping in mind a modular construction would work, I came up with the following design which I felt could easily be duplicated around the shop.

I started off with the above support sections, applying a simple bevel to give the model a clean finish.

I then added the above shelf units, again applying a simple bevel to give the model a nice finish.

I took the above texture from my texture library, the source image was a texture that I took a few years ago at my parents house.

I applied my wood texture to the UV map.

The above is the shelf model with the texture applied.

The complete shelving unit, I left the support beams to a simple grey blinn as i preferred the look.

Later this week I inserted my current models into the environment to see how it looked, heres what I have so far:

Vent model Texturing

December the 6th 2010

This week I continued to work on assets for the shop environment, In order to get the hang of UV mapping in Maya, I decided to start texturing the basic vent model that I made last week, I produced my own texture using Photoshop and applied the texture to each pane of the UV map, I applied a dark inner glow to each pane to give the model a nice effect. I applied the UV texture to a lambert material in the maya hypershader.

Above: the original texture that I made in photohop.

Starting to put the store design into 3D

December the 5th 2010

Today I started roughing out the sections of the store environment in 3D to get a feel for scale, This is what I have so far:

I put together a simple wall model complete with two variations, one with a doorway cut out of one section of wall, I placed an automatic UV map onto this model for ease of future texturing, here is both variations of the model:

Following modelling the wall piece I simply duplicated, translated and rotated the segments to create a quick layout of the building segment:

Continued store development.

December the 2nd 2010

This week amongst other work I have been developing the store model further and have put together some more standard models to place throughout the store. After the first wall model I have decided to take a somewhat simple approach to modelling to give a very refined and simple look. here are some screen grabs of the very simple models I worked on this week:

The above is a very simple model of a display-stand pillar, useful for displaying various items within the ikea store.

The above is a simplistic support pillar to be placed throughout the store.

Further development of the Ikea store idea

November the 18th 2010

Today I started to throw together a quick floor plan of the section of store that the scene would be featured in, I have decided to take a relatively small section of the store but instead intend to pack in plenty of attention to detail to give an authentic look, Here is the top down concept that I threw together in photoshop.

As you can see, I decided to split the store into a workable environment with two main departments, The warehouse department, and the Lighting department, I feel building the environment this way would give me plenty to work with and a nice canvas for the animation to unfold on.

Going ahead with the new idea

November the 14th 2010

Today after talking with Sonia I decided to go ahead with the new idea, I intend to start development in the next few days.

Pixar Jr Lamp Rig

November the 13th 2010

Following completion of the Generi Rig walk cycle, I was given the task of animating the Pixar Jr lamp rig,  We where asked to create a scene where the lamp was to interact with another object and where told that It should be about 10 seconds long, I decided that I would produce a small scene where the lamp was situated within a kitchen environment, My idea was that at night time the lamp would come to life and interact with various items inside the kitchen, things like pots & pans, cups and glasses.

A change of ideas

November the 12th 2010

Today following Sonia's lecture I decided that I would change my idea from the kitchen environment, I decided that I would prefer to attempt something a bit more ambitious as I felt that I was confident with Maya and would decided to choose something that used some more of my previous environmental design skills, The new idea came to mind after watching an Ikea advert on TV (see attached video) which featured cats and kittens being let loose on an Ikea furniture store. The new idea which I had featured the lamp interacting with various objects and generally reaking havoc inside an Ikea furniture store once all the staff had left at night time. I really liked this idea as I had a good image in my head of how to build a realistic store environment.

Getting Started

November the 10th 2010

Following Sonia's tutorials I felt that I was ready to go ahead and make progress with the Generi-Rig walk Cycle, At first I had difficulty with this as I had never done anything like it before, It took me many tries to get it right. For the first attempt at animating the walk cycle my main problems with the animation lied with creating realistic footsteps, I totally under-estimated how difficult this was to achieve, and it wasn't till my fourth attempt that I got it right. Here is my process of development with the walk cycle:
